With just under 19,000 students playing in 2018, football is Massachusetts’ most popular high school sport. The increasing number of families electing to participate in school choice program means some schools see dwindling enrollment, leading to smaller numbers of student athletes. Turners Fall High School suspended the school’s football program this season due to a lack of interest. Mohawk Trail Regional School faced a similar decision about its football team. Then, the MIAA gave the two schools the opportunity to field a combined football team for one season. As Connecting Point’s Ross Lippman shows us, keeping the legacy of football alive in these two small towns led a team of strangers to become a family.
