Safe Usage Sites for Drug Users

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health is considering opening safe usage sites for drug users. At a safe usage site, those who use illicit drugs can be monitored by a medical professional after taking the substance. Proponents of the sites say they are part of an overall strategy of harm reduction. Unlike controversial safe injection sites, people will not be allowed to use illicit drugs inside the center. Mercy Medical Center Chief Medical Officer Dr. Robert Roose and Dr, Ari Kriegsman, Medical Director of Addiction Consult Services at Mercy, sat down with Carolee McGrath to explain what these proposed sites would entail.
