Hazing is an issue that frequently makes headlines, especially on college campuses. Hazing often involves completing humiliating tasks and bring drinking that can lead to sickness and, in some cases, death. UMass Amherst recently suspended a fraternity facing four grand jury indictments. The UMass Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha was later suspended by the national organization as well. To understand the psychology of hazing—and to clarify what sort of initiation activities qualify as hazing—Carrie Saldo spoke with Dr. Elain Campbell, a clinical psychologist at River Valley Counseling Center.
