The Effectiveness of Local Plastic Bag Bans

Last summer, state lawmakers shot down a bill that would have made single-use plastic bags illegal in Massachusetts. But that hasn’t stopped more than 90 cities and towns, including several in western Mass, from implementing their own plastic bag ban. The town of Amherst has had a plastic bag ban in place for about two years. Mimi Kaplan, who leads Waste Reduction efforts in Amherst, and Lorenzo Macaluso of the Center for EcoTechnology joined Carrie Saldo in-studio to discuss the effectiveness and impact of local plastic bag bans.
