On January 1st of this year, a multi-alarm fire destroyed an apartment building in the “flats” section of the city of Holyoke. An electrical issue has been determined to be the cause of the blaze, which took three lives and left many displaced and with nothing.
Connecting Point correspondent Carolee McGrath talked to people impacted by the fire, like Milton Galarza, who lost his friend and roommate in the tragic conflagration on New Year’s Day, and spoke with Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse for an update on the response and his thoughts on how to prevent tragedies like this from happening in the future.
Making It Here: Goat Peak Strings
Vintage stringed instruments are said to be works of art and, if kept in good condition, will often maintain or increase in value over time. At Goat Peak Strings in Easthampton, owners Jane Hamel and Alex Gray are veteran luthiers and collectors with over 75 years of experience between them. They consider themselves caretakers of these fine instruments, and keepers of history, continuing traditions that are generations old. Connecting Point Producer Dave Fraser and Videographer Mark Langevin visited the shop recently and share this story.
Professor Robin Saunders, Director of Graduate Programs in Communications and Information Management at Baypath University in Longmeadow, discusses how fake news played a role in the 2016 elections, and the Cybersecurity Management, Communications and Information Management and related areas of study available to help battle this latest phenomenon of the social media age.
