Three western Massachusetts county jails will take part in pilot program to treat prisoners addicted to opioids. As part of the inmate opioid treatment program, doctors will prescribe opioids like Suboxone to former opioid abusers. Advocates say medication assisted treatment is key to inmates kicking their opioid habit. But, as the Berkshire Eagle first reported, at least one sheriff believes that approach will not help inmates get clean and sober. Carrie Saldo spoke with Berkshire County Sheriff Thomas Bowler about his perspective.
