Freight Car Urban Farming Program at HCC

When you think of farming, you generally think of pastoral fields, or rolling hills. You don’t picture an industrial metal container. But as technology has progressed, people are finding new and innovative places to grow crops – including inside old freight cars. Holyoke is home to two such freight cars. Located on Race Street, Holyoke Community College has been running a Hydroponic Growing program from these cars for over a year. The freight car urban farming program is led by interns at HCC. Farm manager Clari McGale and HCC Vice President for Administration & Finance William Fogarty joined Carolee McGrath to share more about the program.
